I’ll Be Your Son For Chocolate

I’m an auto-pilot parent. Well, sort-of. I mean, I worry and keep track of the kid; but the helicopter parenting days are long gone. And my almost-seventeen-year-old son, Nic, likes to pretend he was hatched from an egg anyway, so he barely gives me the time of day… Until a candy holiday.

Mom, am I going to get an Easter basket this year?

This from the kid who didn’t care if we had a Christmas tree? Ahhh… He wants chocolate.

“Uhmmm, I don’t know Nic. We’ll see.”

And so begins Nic’s Easter candy campaign.

And for the weeks leading up to Easter, I ignored subtle comments and dodged Nic’s basket badgering; although, I must admit, the whole time I secretly enjoyed getting the attention from my youngest son.

And as Easter inched closer, Nic became more creative:

Mom, I don’t really need a basket. Just the candy is fine.

Mom, you can wait until the day after Easter to buy my candy, it will be on sale That’s okay with me you know.

And I would grin; or nod my head; or somehow acknowledge him, without confirming or denying any behind-the-scenes Easter Bunny deal. And Hubs played along too.

The other night Hubs brought home an Easter surprise for Nic, from the grocery store…

“Nic, come look what your Dad bought you for Easter!”

And then Hubs and I sat back and listened to Nic as he told his XBox friends to hold-on, that he would be back in just a minute; and then Nic burst into the kitchen and his face dropped as he spotted the egg dye kit his Dad had bought for him. Yeah. We felt kind of mean. For like one second.

Seriously you guys, I hate coloring eggs.

It’s not about the bunnies Eth, it’s all about the chocolate 🙂
