I Gave That Hotshot Mr. Lee, All The Credit!

How did you get my work pants so clean Mom? And man, they smell sooo good! Mom, really, how did you do this?

Ohhhhh. Ahhhhh. To hear those words… Is every mother’s dream. Or at least it’s mine.

Because I truly love laundry. I take great pride in sorting the colors, treating the stains, using fabric softener on some items, pre-washing other articles, and adding an extra rinse cycle here and there. Sometimes I steam wash, and every once in awhile I’ll use the speed wash cycle -as long as it’s not a super dirty load. And to make my towels super absorbent and fluffy, I like to add vinegar and an extra rinse cycle.

And then I dry the laundry load. High-low-medium; large load to extra-light load; freshen-up cycle; sometimes with a dryer sheet; sometimes the article has to be dried flat so I use my dryer insert and use the air-only cycle.

Then I fold.

I love the warmth, and the sweet smell of fresh laundry. And the soothing repetitiveness of carefully folding each article of clothing, according to it’s shape, and stacking it, according to it’s owner.

And my seventeen year old son noticed. He really noticed. For the first time ever, one of my sons noticed. And here he was, standing in front of me, looking at me, waiting for an answer.

And I couldn’t speak.

I couldn’t explain to my son that I pretreated the God-knows-what type of fast-food stains on his work pants with Shout, and then I ran his pants through a prewash cycle with Borax, and a regular cycle with Gain, finishing with Snuggles liquid fabric softener, and a Bounce dryer sheet on a regular medium dry cycle, in the dryer.

No. I couldn’t say a word. Because I was on the verge of tears. Joyful, pride-filled tears.

And if there is one thing I have learned in my twenty-six years as the mother of three sons, is that boys hate tears, especially tears about stupid stuff.

So the only thing I could utter, without the tears, was…

“Ancient Chinese Secret.”
